geoBoundaries

Administrative region boundary geometry from the geoBoundaries open boundary database (release v6.0.0), published by the William & Mary geoLab.

geoBoundaries is an aggregator, and its boundaries do not share one licence: the 52,840 polygons ingested here carry 22 distinct licences, each running to the agency that originally published the boundary rather than to geoBoundaries. Those agencies are therefore credited below alongside the aggregator. Of the polygons ingested, 37,305 are served through this API, under these licences:

The remaining 15,535 polygons — ODbL 1.0 (10,860), CC BY-SA 2.0 (3,153), CC BY-SA 3.0 Unported (983), and smaller share-alike, national and custom licences — are ingested and marked in the database but withheld: their geometry is not served through this API while the licence review covering those terms is open.

That list describes what is served today, and it is as much a statement about this service as about the data. Servability is decided by an allow-list that is deliberately fail-closed — geometry is served only under a licence the ingest explicitly recognises as permissive — so a permissively-licensed boundary whose licence has not been reviewed yet is counted as withheld rather than served. Licences move from the withheld list to the served one as that review reaches them.
